Dust on laptop fan – First of all if your laptop is old then just open the shaft at the back and see whether the heating is due to the dust which is accumulated near the air vent and which is preventing the hot air to come outside. If there is dust inside, just use a small brush and a cotton swab to clean it. You can also use mini battery operated vacuum cleaners for this purpose.

Surface on which you keep your laptop – This is the primary reasons why your laptop gets overheated very soon. Laptops usually have air vent below and on the sides. So if you keep your laptop on your bed or your lap which doesn’t have flat surfaces, it’s quite obvious that your laptop will gets overheated so quickly as you are just blocking the passage from where hot air inside gets exhausted.
Always use flat surface like a table or some board below your laptop while you are working, never ever directly keep it on the soft mattress of your bed and work.
Not enough cooling from internal Laptop fan – As the form factor of the laptops is becoming thin and sleek, it’s quite obvious that the internal fan cooling won’t suffice to prevent laptop overheating. For this it is highly recommended to buy an external USB cooling pad and keep your laptop on it for extra cooling.
These cooling pads have additional fans which will blow away the hot air from your laptop and will keep it cool. You can easily buy these cooling pads from online stores for a very cheap price.
These are the main reasons why your laptop overheats and gets shutdown. Also while purchasing a new laptop just look at the body of the laptop too. Aluminum body laptops like those of Apple MacBook doesn’t get heated so often while those plastic body laptop may get heated very soon as there’s nothing to absorb the heat within.
