If you have still been using IE 6 and were not able to use GMail, Google Team has release a new code base specially for IE6 to enable features like colored labels, group chat and rich emoticons, GMail Labs, contact manager as well as remote sign out thereby increasing the performance of GMail in Internet Explorer 6.
You can download the critical update which is also a part of Windows Update that addresses this issue by fixing the performance problem that were related to their Javascript implementation. GMail is also a bit stripped down and they have removed features like drop shadows, rounded corners which were causing problem in IE6
