How to access Free internet on Airtel GPRS mobile

Last week while browsing internet on my Nokia phone I came across Teashark Browser which is a Java based app (.jar) and can be installable on popular symbian phones like Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Motorola etc.

Interestingly, when I checked my balance today, I haven’t been charged anything for the internet usage that I did using Teashark browser. Earlier I used to browse with Opera Mini or the inbuilt browser and I was charged as per usage on my prepaid account.

Steps to be followed

  • Install the JAR file from Teashark’s site. If your phone supports direct installing from internet then it’s fine else you’ll have to download the app first and then install it using USB or bluetooth.
  • If you are on prepaid account, under your network settings select access point as Airtel Live. For postpaid I am not sure but it should work similarly. ( Airtel Live service should be activated on your prepaid phone. It’s free of cost and charge as per your usage. Contact their customer care)

Now just open the Teashark browser and start browsing. It’s always recommended that while on mobile phone you access mobile versions of the websites.

Most of the websites today redirect you to the mobile version by putting a prefix ‘m’ in front of the website.  For example you can access orkut as http://m.orkut.com on your cell phone and http://m.gmail.com is used to access your GMail account.

Please note that I have no idea if this is a bug on Airtel system or this is meant to be like this. If this is a bug then I sincerely tell Airtel Guys to fix it, and if it’s not then I think you should use Teashark browser and browse for free on-the-go.

Also, to tell you that , we are not responsible if Airtel starts charging you in burst. It’s been more than 7 days now and they haven’t charged me anything. I’ll update you later if I am charged at the end of the month.

TIP: Vodafone folks, try it out…
